Conquest
Napoleon led the part of the French Army that was in Italy in 1796 for the French Campaign and made it clear he was a brilliant strategist.
Later that year, the Revolutionary French Parliament was in chaos and needed a leader; they chose another general but he was killed in battle, so instead they chose Napoleon. Amidst the revolutionary turmoil, Napoleon installed a Consulate of three people, but secretly Napoleon was plotting to take over. The Consulate forced the French Parliament directors to resign and it looked as if Napoleon was going to lose power to his fellow Consul in the process of the resignation of the Directorate. Instead, Napoleon rewrote the constitution and declared himself dictator. |
